From AIGA Chicago: The story of signage on the New York City Subway System is both a long and fascinating tale. Once a bewildering hodgepodge of lettering styles, sizes, shapes, materials, colors, and messages, the signs began a radical transition in the mid-1960s. In the hands of design firm Unimark International, the system’s mess gave way to the clarity that reigns today, with station names, directions, and instructions in crisp Helvetica. Ultimately, order triumphed over chaos—but the journey was anything but easy. New York design historian and lettering artist Paul Shaw knows the story better than anyone, and he’ll be on hand to share it with us on November 16.

From Hornswaggler Arts: For one night only, Hornswaggler Arts celebrates two years of hand-crafted cocktails, opening exhibitions and collected works. On Friday, October 7th, 2011, they'll be exhibiting the Hornswaggler Collection in its entirety at the Co-Prosperity Sphere in Bridgeport. Over forty collected works will be on display, and will have delicious cocktails at the ready. The show will be up for one night only. 6-10pm at Co-Prosperity Sphere, 3219 S. Morgan St.

Tucked away in small Two Rivers, Wisconsin is a wonderful place for any typographic and print enthusiast. Hamilton Wood Type Museum is home to more than 1.5 million pieces of wood type and more than 1,000 styles and sizes of patterns. You could easily call it one of the most impressive collections in the world. You can find the details of the museum here.
