  • Saskatchewan Jazz Festival 2011 With a lineup of artists hitting almost every music genre possible, it's hard to believe they call it the "Jazz Fest". For their 25th anniversary, we set out to reinvent and redesign the festival by moving them in a more energetic direction; one that was paired tighter wtih sound and experience. Rich, and filled to the edge with a bold clash of typographic details, pattern and color, this year's materials embraced a spontaneity and energy unlike any year before.     2011 Print Design, Festival Design, Branding
  • Typeforce 2 Exhibition Catalogue Typeforce 2 is both a catalogue of typographic artistry, and a recount of the gallery reception experience. Broken up into three distinct sections, we set out to mesh a sense of tradition and energy through colorful visual cues; the motivation (blue), the substance (full color), and the experience (red).     2011 Typography, Design, Print Design

  • Typeforce 4 Submission Announcement Typeforce is an annual gallery show and event organized and curated by Firebelly Design and Public Media Institute, held at the Co-Prosperity Sphere in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The show features and focuses on emerging artists working in the medium of language, lettering and typography.

The following series of web graphics and print posters were created at Firebelly to announce this year's call for submissions. The imagery and artwork photographed was meant to focus on the undiscovered and emerging nature of the artists featured in the show. In many cases, typography and lettering can be a quiet pursuit or considered a "labor of love." The absence of faces and recognizable people in the final announcement support this idea of unknown representatives and nameless heroes of our craft; they use their hands and skills to give language personality and persona. Basic geometric shapes framed the emerging hands, providing a subtle visual cue and hint at how each uppercase letter of the Latin alphabet is constructed. While the imagery is expressive, playful and symbolic of the many works on display for the duration of the show, the supporting information and details represent classic ideas and a straight forward and organized sensibility about typography and typesetting.

  • You Are Beautiful "U" A letter "U" constructed of cut wooden layers, threaded rod, wing nuts and paint as part of a group contribution to the You Are Beautiful campaign.     2012 Street Art, Typography
  • Pop Up Shop Announcement Custom type, hand-crafted letters and photography highlight this in-studio shop for good featuring some of Chicago's brightest creative artisans. Final executions included printed flyer, email campaign and on-site banners at the day of the shop. 50% of the day's take was donated to Reason to Give, an online storefront for families and individuals in Chicago's Humboldt Park neighborhood.     2011 Design, Typography, Photography
  • Chicago Women's Health Center Brand Redesign & Strategy Chicago Women’s Health Center, recipient of Firebelly's 2011 Grant for Good, underwent a complete rebrand to more accurately represent their mission and clientele. The new, more inclusive identity reflects the organization’s evolution over their 35-year history into both a women’s and trans-friendly health care provider in the city. Their new website serves as a source of information on CWHC’s services and programs, as well as a tool for client payments and users donations.     2012 Print Design, Web Design, Branding
  • Buzz Company 10th Anniversary Postcards A set of seven postcards reminding the creative community that The Buzz Company was celebrating ten years of talent engagement and placement.     2011 Print Design, Graphic Design, Illustration
  • Firebelly Holiday Coaster Set 2012 brought us many new opportunities and relationships with friends and clients. To show our appreciation, the studio crafted a personal holiday gift coaster set and package. As an extra "thank you" a few pairs of designed and engraved whiskey tumblers were included along with a select number of sets.

Using shapes, colors and motifs inspired by the season of cold, each set contained four die-cut and letterpressed, 2-color, hand-stamped editioned coasters. Also included were custom stamped muslin cloth wrap, tag and personal note. Frigid weather demands warm sentiments. Often, the best gift someone can receive is positive encouragement and a pat on the back for a job well done. Each coaster had a friendly, glass-half-full message which included custom lettering and illustration.

Coasters printed at Rohner Letterpress in Chicago, IL and designed/crafted with the team at Firebelly.

  • AIGA Portland Design Week: Graffiti Type Showcase Hand-illustrated, custom letter "H" created for AIGA Portland Design Week.     2012 Drawing, Illustration, Typography
  • Firebelly Design Business Cards Firebelly's newly designed cards line up with the studio's adage of standing out, leaving an impression and inspiring along the way.

We used duplexed French stock creating a 280 lb. card which was then edge painted to match a spot florescent pink. One either side of the card, Reflex blue and a spot pink were letterpress printed with a deep impression.

  • Redmoon Website Redmoon’s performances of public art aim to engineer wonder, initiate public engagement and build community. Through its unique design and functionality, their new website provides a framework to showcase the history and mission of their distinctive spectacle work.     2012 Graphic Design, Web Design
  • Relabld Contact Cards Relabld is an online fashion market built from an independent currency system of user product appraisals. Cards include engraving on logo and informational text, duplexing of paper stock to 260# and edge painting yellow.     2011 Design, Branding, Print Design
  • TWISTA Promotional Booklet The 2009-10 three-color informational booklet highlighting TWISTA's mission, goals and accomplishments. Florescent color with metallic spots and heavy photography reinforce the strength of this organization.     2011 Design, Print Design, Photography
  • The Queerist.com Contact Cards To highlight this new event and venue site targeted at the gay community, general contact cards were needed for multiple locations and multiple representatives. New and continuous staff turnover was the main challenge to printing cards of this detail level. To solve this problem, a simple label form was created where new names could easily be entered, printed and affixed to the card making each one unique to the representative that is in need. When no label is applied, the card leaves open space for contact notes, personal message or reminders. Across the cards the brand personality was inserted in simple, yet not-so-subtle messaging. Offset printing (orange), letterpress printing (charcoal grey) and offset custom affixed labels were used in this piece.     2012 Print Design, Branding
  • Typeforce Exhibition Catalogue This small format book was created after the Typeforce exhibition as a way to show off the incredible talent within – designer/artists. While creating the book we wanted more than anything to promote the artists featured, but also to open up the spectrum of possibilities for the years to come. In order to question the limits, we separated out each artist with neon orange spreads containing everything from flaming pastry type to sign language.

This book was a collaboration between Darren McPherson and Will Miller, with design assistance from Plural. Made possible by our incredible sponsors – Andrew Dembitz from Unisource, Jennifer Beil at Graphic Arts Studio with their 6 color printing and Domtar with their Super Smooth paper.

Artists included: Jeremiah Chiu, Renata Graw, David Weik, Billy Baumann, Matthew Hoffman, Chris Eichenseer, Chad Kouri, Ryan Thurwell, Luke Williams, Tnop, Andy Luce, John Pobojewski, Darren McPherson, Lora Fosberg, Margot Harrington, Greg Calvert, Aaron Pedersen, Duncan MacKenzie, Will Miller, Nick Adam, Damian Abraham. Show put together by the Public Media Institute and Firebelly Design.

  • We Got It, In WPB This advertising campaign for the Chicago neighborhood Wicker Park Bucktown began as a way to revamp the sense of humor and character in the area prior to the holiday season. With the main goal of bringing people back, we set up a range of witty, crude and at times, just plain odd combinations of one of a kind items, eats and services.

Created while at Firebelly Design, this project was a collaboration between Darren McPherson, Will Miller and Antonio Garcia.
        2011 Print Design, Typography, Advertising
  • Holiday Pop-Up Shop Install To get the word out for Firebelly Design's Pop-Up Shop, we constructed custom letter-shaped balloons from an original typeface to form "pop-up." Threaded duct tape, created first as lettering in the studio, was applied to chain link fencing to form the word "shop." The whole install was recorded through the day, including the shoot towards the evening which yielded the final printed flyer imagery. Install created with Nick Adam.     2011 Installation Design, Lettering, Print Design
  • AIGA Chicago Snapshot Book 2011 AIGA Chicago produces a retrospective book for it's annual members meeting. Our studio was asked to design this year's piece. This book made use of spot sand trapping varnish, spot florescent and a wraparound cover band. Designed with Nick Adam at Firebelly Design.     2011 Design, Print Design, Typography
  • Typeforce Title Wall Installation As designers, we see one path has the ability to influence many. Looking forward and anticipating the problems of tomorrow, we shape the environment and framework of discussion for today.

We pursue this role with a desire to influence new ideas, future form, expression, technology and ideology. To inspire not only those who are here, but those to come. To both create an impact now, and leave an imprint upon where we have been. For us, allowing design to address and solve issues moves designers back towards the role of thinkers, explorers and problem solvers.

This project was a collaboration between Darren McPherson and Will Miller. Photographs by IShootRockstars.

  • Firebelly Design Show @ Pratt Institute, NYC It's not that we don't take design seriously. It's just that much of our best work is born from embracing spontaneity and following our instincts. Two things hard found with a narrow focus.

We believe in paying forward the good that has come through our doors, proving through education and influence that passion inspires action.

We feel a constant stream of inspiration from the fire in our clients, the encouragement of our collaborators and the world we work and live in.

These intersections are where this exhibition begins.

This exhibition was a collaboration between all of us working at Firebelly at the time: Dawn Hancock, Will Miller, Darren McPherson, Alex Killough, Lindsay McMenamin, Ben Wagner & Justin Gilman.

  • Typeforce 2 Exhibition Title Wall With so many of our projects demanding a unique vision for life in print, a simple thank you goes to Graphic Arts Studio and all involved. We see them as much a part of our design process and decision making as our client conversations and brainstorming sessions. Using materials kindly given to us by their team, we set out to create a big “thanks” inspired by their mark, materials they use and processes they play with. Without them, so much of this show, this install and our craft could not come to light. Thanks guys!
